The Soft Spot or Molera.

From the beginning of the development of the Chihuahua, the breed has displayed a "soft spot" on the top of its head. In this breed, it is known as a MOLERA.  At the start of the development of this breed the molera was considered as a mark of a pure bred Chihuahua, and it is still considered as such in most Chihuahua breed standards all over world.

The presence of the molera is due to the domed shaped head of the Chihuahua. Many Chihuahua puppies are born without the molera, this dose not mean they are not pure bred. To make it clear the molera is a small opening in the top of the head where the skull dose not close up all the way (see the photo above for an example). Some molera's are round, some are diamond shaped, some are very small & some are larger, its presence and size are nothing to become alarmed over.

All new owners need to be aware that many people and some veterinarians not familiar with the Chihuahua breed have to misdiagnose the molera as being a condition known as hydrocephalus (water on the brain).

Some times the molera closes up as the puppy gets older, but not always.  Keep in mind that the molera dose not effect the Chihuahuas health in any way.
