Preparing for your new puppy: It is very important to be prepared and that means puppy proofing your home, and having what you need to care for your new puppy. Please be sure to read our Puppy Care Sheet found on our web site www.apup4u.com . The must haves: You should have: 1) Puppy food 1) Dog Bed 2) Food & water dishes 2) X-Pin 3) Wee Wee pads 3) Chew toys 4) Netri-Cal 4) Plush toys 5) Chicken baby food 5) Puppy Shampoo 6) A Vet To care for your puppy 6) A crate 7) A 3 cc Syringe 7) Toe nail clippers 8) Can dog food just in case (Mighty Dog Gourmet Meal) or (Cesar's Puppy) Feeding: When you bring your new puppy home you should show them where the food and water is. For the first 6 months you should keep dry puppy food out for them 24 hours a day. Stress: If your puppy is being shipped you should feed them 1 cc of Netri-Cal and about 1/2 a jar of baby food as soon as you pick them up from the airport. You should offer them water as well. You should also bring a towel and baby wipes to clean up any mess they may have made in their crate. Watch your puppies stool, if you see any mucus, blood, or watery diarrhea it could be a sign of Coccidia a microscopic parasite. This is a common parasite, and is easily treated however if its not treated right away your puppy can die due to the diarrhea caused by it. Just in case your puppy gets stressed you should have a can of (Mighty Dog Gourmet Meal) or (Cesar's Puppy) I have found any sick or stressed dog will eat either of these. I also like to give them 2 table spoons full of can food or chicken baby food before putting them up for the night, and first thing in the morning. As these are the times that they are most likely to get hypoglycemic. I also give them 1 CC of Netri-Cal before bed and first thing in the morning. If they still will not eat so try boiled chicken, if they are still not eating call us and your vet. You Must monitor Food & Water intake to prevent Hypoglycemia! Grooming: Puppies should not be bathed more than twice a month unless they are soiled. Before bathing you should place cotton balls in their ears to keep water form running in the ears. Be sure not to let water get in their nose as this could cause your puppy to become ill. If you have a long haired puppy you will need to keep their bottoms shaved to keep them clean. You should brush a long haired puppy every day to keep the hair from tangling. Be sure to use an ear wash to keep the ears free of infection, this should be done if you see any dirt in your puppies ears or if there is an odder coming from them. Once a month you should express your puppies anile glands (Your vet can show you how). Remember to cut your puppies toe nails, if you do not know how ask your vet can show you. This should be done once a month. Health Care: Remember to keep up with your puppy shots, & yearly shots. You should start your puppy on heart worm medication, and some type of flea control. Your dog should be wormed once a month. Please remember not to let your puppy walk around out side until he has had all his shots for at least 7 days. We have worked hard to research and provide you with information to help you to raise a healthy puppy. Please read over all the info provided under Puppy Education to give your puppy a happy healthy life. |
